Fall 2011 (September–November)

On Teresa’s birthday in September we kept up the tradition from last year by going with the Gneitings and Martins (and the Danas this year) to the “Fruit Loop” around Hood River in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. We had good food & good times. Teresa bought some fruit to can again – the peaches didn’t work out, but those pears are DELICIOUS!

I took advantage of the beginning of fall and drove to Larch Mountain for a nice hike in a lush forest – and a gorgeous panoramic view of 4 different mounts around the Columbia River Gorge. The panoramic picture I took is too big, but here are a couple of the views I saw.

In October, Krista and Elaina surprised Teresa by flying up here and showing up at her work with balloons! Teresa said she saw them and just started balling! We had fun the next few days and went to the Oregon coast (Cannon Beach) for a cold but fun day at the beach.

And last week I had my 4th part of National Board exams. It was on Friday and Saturday. My birthday was on Saturday so I was able to go out with Teresa after the hours of testing were all finished! Yes, we saw a movie - and yes, I had pumpkin pie.
I decided that I would celebrate my birthday week for the week after my birthday (since I was just studying and stressing the week before). So it just ended with the fun opportunity of having Jon McBride (my sister Rachel’s husband) in town for a Weber State football game. We went out for dinner last night and took the train around downtown. Jon, as always, was great company to have around. It was endearing to see him talk with such beaming joy about his little girl, Fia, and his new baby boy, Sam.

After dinner, Teresa was pretty excited when we stopped by St. Cupcake just before it closed – honestly, we all were. Half way through Jon’s first mini cupcake he paused and said he was just trying to understand how it was possible to make it taste so good!

Rest of Summer 2011

Okay, quick catching up of the rest of our summer. We did some camping (all right, just once) at Battleground Lake in Washington. After hauling our gear up to the spot with 3-4 wheelbarrow trips, and setting up camp, it was SOOO refreshing to take a swim in the cool lake water. Refreshing for Jeff anyway. Teresa just watched.

And then July, as always, was packed with all kinds of fun. Teresa’s parents came for her Dad’s second Seattle to Portland bike race. Yes, over 200 miles in 1 day. Awesome! It was so great to see them, and Ann even let me take her picture!

Then my Mom, Dad, and youngest brother (Ben) drove up and spent a few days with us. Becca, Kaytie, and Christian were already living up here for the summer so it was a blast! We toured the Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood with a nice southern view of Mount Jefferson. In the movie “The Shining” they used the exterior of this lodge to represent the cold, empty, manor where Jack Nicholson’s character lived with his family for a season....”Here’s Johnny!”

Then we hiked to Mirror Lake with great views of Mount Hood.

And, of course, visited some falls in the Columbia River Gorge. We also checked out the Bonneville Lock & Dam where we watched the fish swim up the fish ladder and the lamprey sticking on the windows!

Visiting Grandpa & Grandma Favero in June

Over Father’s Day weekend I had the awesome opportunity of flying down to L.A. and going to see my Grandma & Grandpa Favero in Bakersfield. I had not seen them in 2 years. Since then Grandpa had suffered from a fall where he hit his head and became unable to fully control the right half of his body. When he speaks we cannot understand him (though he does not recognize it). He thinks he is speaking normally and is frustrated when we fail to respond properly to his questions/requests/demands. Though I have heard him say “No” “Yeah” and “Wow”, most of his communication is in the rhythm of normal speech but with the varying use of what sounds like “Wah, wah”.
So while there I took a few pictures and videos.
This one is when he sang hymns while my Aunt Dayna played the piano. He sang in correct tune and rhythm – and even sang tenor or bass on some of the songs!

It was fun making him laugh because that is the Grandpa I remember. Since I couldn’t always understand what he was saying, it was usually easier to tell him stories and fun memories I have with him.

Grandma made us some fried apples – she had been talking about them for a couple days and they just sounded so good! Besides, even after her cataract surgery that week it was pretty hard to get her to keep still. Always gardening or doing something around the house. This was a safer activity (no bending over as the doctor had outlawed).

Linda & Darwin stay there 5 days a week and help Grandpa with eating and getting around. It is a big help to Grandma.

I got to spend my last day there with my cousin, Tyler. I hadn't seem him for 5 years! These are his adorable kids, Carter and Lucy.

We drove to L.A. and I saw a bunch of things I had never had the chance to see: the tar pits, Chinatown, Hollywood, farmer’s market, the Santa Monica pier. It was a blast!

We took advantage of a sunny day and drove to the ocean! It was a bit chilly but, yes, I (Jeff) still jumped in for a quick dip in the Pacific Ocean. How could I possibly pass it up?

Also, I drove a little fast on the way there and got a $245 speeding ticket...doh.

So here are the only pictures to record the grand day out – hopefully Teresa doesn’t get mad at me for posting our goofiness! But, hey, you know us – we’re kinda goofy.

January–snow caves with the scouts

Yes, I am actually updating the blog monthly now! We’ll see how long it lasts...

Anyway, it was a beautiful day when we took our 11 year old scouts over to Mount Hood to build snow caves.

Brother Jentzsch built a fort next to a tree, and the rest of us just dug into the hill and built some pretty impressive caves. It was a practice to prepare the boys for the day when they actually sleep in one – a different experience altogether.

Of course, the best part was destroying them!

And it was a gorgeous view – especially when the sun began to set and throw shadows across the snow.

December – Utah for Christmas!

In October, I had a feeling that it would be good to go home for Christmas. Teresa only had 1 day off work and we hadn’t thought it would really be possible. But I followed the feeling and looked up flights. That day ended up being very difficult for Teresa and I helped her feel better by saying, “We are flying home for Christmas!” Yeah, I scored big points for that.

Anyway, here are some pictures from our visit home. We made it just in time for the Spilker Christmas Eve.

And on Christmas day we made it to the Favero home just in time to hear my brother Joe call home (over Skype) from his mission in Belgium/Brussels/Netherlands.

Here we all are – gathered around the laptop talking to Joe.

When Becca put Fia on Granny’s lap she said, “Get that ugly baby with it’s ugly face off me....she looks like her dad.” Her dad, Jon, pointed at himself and raised his eyebrows(like “what’s she saying about me?”).

Yeah, she wasn’t feeling all too great – but I’m glad she came!

October/November

We stayed a couple nights in a beautiful home in the Columbia River Gorge in October with the Barnettes, Batemans, and Humpherys (our dinner group friends here in our apartment complex).

Halloween - Teresa pulled off a pretty awesome punk rocker-esque costume for our church’s “trunk-or-treat” (decorate the trunks of your cars and the kids come around to each car in the parking lot).

I call this photo “Missing the Big Picture”. So often I am focused on the minutia right in front of me and ignore the magnificent in the background. I become too caught up in what’s coming next to step back and appreciate the big picture. Bridal Veil Falls, in the background, is actually pretty gorgeous (and worth the “stepping back” to appreciate).

Jeff’s birthday – I chose to take a bite out of my birthday pie (Favero family tradition!).

Thanksgiving was awesome at our friends, the Eagers. Napoleon, a refugee of several years from Liberia, was there also and recounted some of the wars, violence, and suffering of his people. It was very memorable, and made me feel very thankful for home, family, country, freedom.

September – Oregon coast, Columbia River Gorge, California!

Septembers are always full of beauty up here and we took advantage of it this year. For Teresa’s birthday we headed to the coast (Seaside, OR) and then into the Columbia River Gorge for Labor Day.

There is a loop of farms & vineyards near Hood River that they call the “Fruit Loop”. We enjoyed the gorgeous views of Mount Hood with our good friends the Gneitings (from Idaho) & the Martins (from Alaska).

Teresa bought heaps of pears for a great price & proceeded to can them all the next week. Delicious! Later, she did the same thing with apples and then peaches. What a woman!

At the end of September, I was fortunate enough to still be out of school and drove down to California to pick up Teresa’s dad. He had ridden his bike in the Seattle to Portland bike race in July and got in his mind that he would come back to Portland and ride all the way down to California! So I picked him and his bike up near the Redwoods and got to see some of God’s beautiful creations.

Here are a couple nice views of the mouth of Klamath River in northern California.

This is the morning we sent Teresa’s dad off on his own for the next 1-2 weeks (he rode to the coast and then all the way down to Fortuna, CA).

August – Jeff flew to Utah twice!

After returning home in July, I found out my Grandpa Flamm had passed away. I was able to fly back to Utah again for his funeral and see my family and relatives. It was a good experience.

The day after the funeral we visited the resting place of Grandpa’s body. It is in the mountains looking down on Ogden. We sat in the grass under the shade of the tree next to his grave for a while – a nice, peaceful spot. I’ve always felt a little weird at cemeteries, and haven’t really had much experience with death. But I felt ok this time, just smiling there with my family, thinking about all the goodness of Grandpa.

Later in the month I took my scouts on a 5 mile hike and then to our ½ week of scout camp for the 11 year old scouts (called Camp Helaman). Wow, they can be a handful!

July is always eventful

I don’t know why, but July always has a lot going on - and I always have a bunch of pictures to choose from.

I finished 7th quarter at chiropractic school, and decided to take the summer off for a much needed break. Teresa was rocking it at the bank, and I was looking for work here and there.

I went down to Utah for a week to help the Faveros move to their new home (old place now called “house” & new place: “home”). Unfortunately, Teresa still had to work, so she kicked it at home and watched scary movies all alone.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to go up to the Ranch with the my family, and I enjoyed the spectacular views from a new path that had been formed to reach the top of the plateau (“the bench”). I just had never realized the vastness of the area up above the Ranch! And it was fun to look down on the Ranch from a new angle.

But my Dad got a tick on his leg! Luckily it attached to the scar he had earned from some crazy driving up at the Ranch a while ago.

Teresa’s parents drove up to visit and for her Dad to ride in the Seattle to Portland (STP) bike race – a 206 mile bicycle ride! Here he is before and after. What an animal!

Then, on the very last day of July, we had the chance to adventure through the Ape Caves in Washington. Our good friend, Chris Bentley, was working up here for the summer and it was his last weekend.

The Ape Cave is a huge lava tube (12,810 ft – the longest lava tube known in North America) just south of Mount St. Helens that was discovered in 1947 and must be traversed with flashlights or lanterns. It was kind of freaky.

Funny thing about this picture is that before the flash I could only see Chris holding a flashlight to light up his face!

Jan – June 2010

Okay, now that I’m taking the summer off from school (Jeff), it is time for some catching up. Not much happened in January & in February we celebrated our 7 year anniversary!

In March, we got to go home to Utah. But first I visited the Ranch for a couple days!

Since my family, the Faveros, were going to be moving to a new home, I gathered some of my artwork from my childhood. Here is an awesome poem I wrote, and the accompanying drawing – I remember that the knight’s head was so big that I had to draw him standing next to the horse (I guess he’s there to pick up the sword!). That is my painting of the Ranch (gee, I must like that place) and then evidence of my colorblindness in the purple sky and flag.

In Utah, I was able to arrive in time for my sister Rachel’s birthday party. That is her adorable daughter, Fia.

May, back in Portland, I captured a gorgeous rainbow and then turned around to see this sunset – all right at our apartments!

And here, in June, is one of Teresa’s creepy pets! She enjoys collecting freaky spiders in mason jars so she can look at them and feed them ants and stuff.

October – December 2009

Justin stopped by Portland on his way back from Hawaii and we took some pictures in the Columbia River Gorge (Multnomah Falls above, and below is the stream flowing from Wahkeena Falls).

I took in a lot of the beauties of fall from campus. I spend most of my time at school – Western State Chiropractic College (though now the school is officially the University of Western States).

Teresa was quite a rocker for Halloween, wasn’t she?

In November, when we found out that Teresa got a new job for a nearby bank (Columbia State Bank) we decided to celebrate that – and my birthday – by heading to Astoria for a few days! Here we are on the top of the Astoria Column.

We stayed at an awesome bed & breakfast there called Clementine’s and had a whole suite to ourselves. The specific building, called the Moose Temple, was a Mormon church at one point!

In December, we enjoyed a formal Christmas Gala for my school, bought a 10 foot tall tree from the scouts, and as you can see Teresa still has her cute short hair!

September 2009 - finally

Started the month with Teresa’s birthday!

Dad & Joe came to visit (on their way to Hawaii to see Kaytie & Christian!) and we followed the Lewis and Clark Trail to Astoria, OR.

We climbed the 164 stairs of the 125 foot tall Astoria Column to see the panoramic view of the Columbia River meeting the Pacific Ocean. Gorgeous!

The Astoria-Megler Bridge is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America (over 4 miles) – and it’s cool looking.

We also visited the Fort Clatsop National Memorial (Lewis & Clark National Historical Park) and then drove south to Cannon Beach, where Dad & Joe really got into the photographing.

We even went downtown and saw Teresa at her job in the Fox Tower (in the heart of downtown Portland). This turned out to be her last full day! The next day the company had to “let go” 5 temps - so she came home early and we went on a hike!

That weekend Mom, Becca, and Ben stopped by on their way to Hawaii, so we saw some of the gorgeous waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge with them.

July & August – Utah, Washington, & Oregon

After being at the Ranch in June, I returned to Utah for my sister Kaytie’s wedding.

Grandma & Grandpa Favero at the wedding reception. I caught Grandpa dead asleep & Grandma was in the middle of putting on her sweater – but she struck a quick pose for me just the same.

Ben, me, Kaytie, Justin, and Joe (all the Favero kids except 3). Darling Abigail Dursteler (my older sister, Emily’s, daughter) at the reception – what a cutie. Here we are as pleasant as pumpkin pie on a cool fall evening.

Then, soon after returning home to Portland, I decided it was about time that I visit Mount St. Helens. It was about 2 hours north then 1 hour east of Portland to get to the northwest side of the mountain where the huge hole is right in your face.

I look pretty happy, despite the fact that I got a flat tire at the last viewpoint right before the mountain. Oh well, took a few minutes to replace the flat (nobody offered to help!) and I was back in the car and at the mountain in 2 minutes.

I couldn’t help but think of Brian Regan when I passed through this “Blasting Zone!” (shouldn’t that read “ROAD CLOSED”??).

Here is gorgeous Teresa the day of her newer (and even shorter!) haircut. We were enjoying the warm day in the grassy courtyard area of our apartment complex – a water & sun type of birthday party for Bethany’s son (she is on the right).

And finally we reach August. I had a scout camp for my 11 year olds, Teresa and I celebrated our 7 anniversary of when we met (8/22/02), and I went to the Oregon coast with my good friend Chris Bentley from Ogden who was working here for the summer.

Overlooking Cape Lookout State Park and the gorgeous Netarts Bay. Us down on the beach after having thrashed in the cold Pacific Ocean waves for quite a while. That was a fun day. And these were a couple of awesome months!

After finals were over at WSCC, we headed south to Silver Falls State Park. Unfortunately, I (Jeff) found out the 2 bedroom cabin I had booked was actually for the week before - oops! But we found a nearby cabin and paid again for somewhere to stay for the night. The next day we hiked the "Trail of Ten Falls". It was 9 miles and wore us out!

For spring break I went to the coast with a couple friends - we stayed in a yurt!

The yurt was just a walk away from the beach. I actually stayed there with Daniel (Benson's dad) & Brandon (Chandler's dad). We played a few games of Settler of Catan!

The middle car is my pinewood derby car (yes, that is a can of potted meat strapped to the top).

Here is Teresa back in April (of course, now her hair is EVEN SHORTER!).

February Was Fun

I usually don't include many words, but here are a few "details" (just for you Kate) about what we are up to.
Teresa started a new job downtown at the Louisiana-Pacific Corporation as the Document Specialist in the claims department. I visited her yesterday and she works on the 10th floor of a big, gorgeous building right in the center of downtown. Nice view too. She's loving it - though it is hard to go to work while I have my 2 week spring break right now.
And me...well, I'm enjoying "my 2 week spring break right now." I managed to get passing grades for 2 quarters of chiropractic school, so I just gotta keep that up for the next 10.

Newport for Teresa's Birthday!

For Teresa's birthday we drove the 3 hours southwest to Newport on the coast of Oregon. We arrived late Friday night (Sep. 5) and left Sunday afternoon.

We awoke to a gorgeous ocean view!

We toured the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast (93 feet tall):Yaquina Head Lighthouse , built in 1872 and just restored last year.

114 stairs to the top to see the original lense still in use. The light shines 162 feet above the ocean and can be seen 19 miles out to sea.

Having Fun in the Northwest

Teresa is on her third week as a receptionist for an insurance company (less than 4 miles from home!). I am on my 5th and final temp job. Next week is my last working week before school. And we're just enjoying our time up here in the Northwest!

The cabins were new and in great shape.

Survived the Move to Portland (July 15th)

We made the 700+ mile drive in one day (safe and sound thanks to the brand new truck from Penske). I drove all the way, but Teresa was a great support - she's so cute, she gave me a reason to always keep my eyes open.

We unpacked 1/3 of the truck on our own that night (quietly since we started around 10:00). What a mess! We did it all so we could sleep on a real bed.

Jeff Graduated from Weber State!

In May, we had a few fun events:

Jeff graduated from Weber State University - earning his Bachelor of Integrated Studies in the 3 areas of Zoology, Chemistry, and Asian Studies.
He even decided to "walk".

The VERY next day we left for Portland, for T's job interview. It went well (in the top 15 of over 250 applicants!), but she didn't get it.
Fortunately, we drove up there a few days before the interview and enjoyed ourselves (though we did NOT go bungee jumping this time!).
Jeff also enjoyed time off school by going up to the Ranch over Memorial Day weekend with the Faveros (T relaxed at home and recovered from having her top wisdom teeth out - no fun).

GUESS WHAT? Jeff was accepted to his #1 choice of chiro colleges last week (Western States in Portland, OR)!!!!!!! So we're moving up to Portland around August!

This is our nephew, Josh. He was having a good time!

Here is sweet Teresa at the Spilkers, where we enjoyed our CHRISTmas Eve (despite the crazy snow storm that tried to kill us on the way there!).

At the Flamm Christmas party Grandpa Bryce made his way to the front of the room and expressed his gratitude and wonder at the blessings of having such a great family.

He said that when you get to his stage of life (and probably even after this life) you look back and see a lot of things that you wish you would have done more. Then he said, "There are a lot of things I wish I had done more - except having kids....we have plenty of those!"

The kids were all cute during the Nativity, and John and Melissa were a great Joseph and Mary. Ben (my little brother) was the sheep with the black gloves for paws...pretty funny looking!

Thought I'd start this out with a bang. Teresa and I just got back from Portland, OR where we visited Western States Chiropractic College (I'm applying there this semester). It was beautiful and fun, but I want to always have short entries so - to get to the point: here is a video of a side trip we took up to Washington on Saturday!
